The theme explored here for my artwork is factory farming. I had researched extensively all areas of factory farming and mass production of meat which had affected me in ways that I never knew it would. I had decided that a play on Picasso's piece ‘Guernica’ is the perfect concept for me to paint as he had created the piece as a response to the Spanish Civil War, creating a huge impact on the audience and delivering a strong story of the pain that the victims had to endure. Using the composition of ‘Guernica’ - I wanted to deliver a similar story to the audience. Chickens have their own story, their own war and their own battles every day. I used acrylic paint on canvas to visually demonstrate how claustrophobic, dark and distressing battery hens' lives are – and how little research into these industries can change you as a person.
